Alodoben DS
PRESENTATION:
Aldoben DS tablet: Each chewable tablet contains Albendazole USP 400 mg.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Aldoben DS: (Albendazole) is one of the most potent benzimidazole anthelmintics active against most nematodes and some cestodes. It is used in the treatment intestinal nematodes infection an in higher dosage in treatment of hydatid disease. Aldoben DS exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal and larvicidal activity. The drug is thought to exert its anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake in the susceptible helminths, thereby depleting the energy level until it becomes inadequate for survival. Immobilization is followed by death of parasites.

INDICATIONS:
Aldoben DS: is indicated in single and mixed infestations of:
Enterobius Vermicularis - Pinworm of threadworm
Trichuris trichiura - Whipworm
Ascaris lumbriccoides - Large roundworm
Ancylostoma duodenale - Hookworm Necator americanus
- Hookworm Taenia spp.
- Tapeworm Strongyloides stercoralis
- Threadworm

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIION:
Adults or children over 2 years of age:
400 mg (1 Aldoben DS) tablet as a single dose in cases of Enterobius vermicularis. Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. In case of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis, 400 mg (1 Aldoben DS tablet) as a single dose should be given for 3 consecutive days. If a patient is not cured on follow-up after 3 weeks, a second course of treatment is indicated Aldoben DS tablets may not be chewed, swallowed or crushed and mixed with food. No specific procedures such as fasting or purging are required.

Children of 1-2 years of age: Recommended dose is a single dose of 200 mg [Half (12/2)

Hydatid Disease: For Echinococcus granulosus, adult over 60 kg. medical treatment, 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days; upto three cycles of treatment may be given. Adjunct in surgical treatment, pre-surgery, 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days, repeat cycle once before surgery; post-surgery (if viable cysts after pre-surgery treatment, or if no pre-surgery treatment, or if only shrt pre-surgery course), 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days, repeat cycle once. Echinococcus multilocularis, adult over 60 kg, 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days; prolonged treatment may be required.

CONTRAINDICATION:
Albendazole sensitive patients. Because Albendazole was found to be embryotoxic and teratogenic in rat and rabbit, its use is contraindicated in pregnant women or those likely to be pregnant. For women of child bearing age (15 or 40 years), Aldoben DS should be administered within 7 days of the start of normal menstruation.

ADVERSE REACTIONS:
A few cases of gastrointestinal discomfort and headache have been reported, but no definite relationship with the drug has been shown.

SIDE EFFECT:
At the usual therapeutic doses effects have generally been restricted to gastrointestinal disturbances such as transient abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Side effects have been reported more frequently with the high doses tried in the treatment of hydatid disease have included allergic reactions. raised liver enzyme values leukopenia and alopecia.

USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATIION:
Albendazole should not be administered during pregnancy and in women thought to be pregnant. It is not known whether albendazole or its metabolites are secreted in human breast milk. Thus Aldoben DS should not be used during lactation unless the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risk associated with treatment.
