Albamax DS
Description
Albamax DS is a preparation of albendazole which is a broad spectrum anthelmintic. In addition to its vermicidal properties, Albamax DS has been found to have both ovicidal and larvicidal in man

Indications
Albamax DS is indicated in single and mixed infestations of:
Enterobius vermicularis - Pinworm or threadworm
Enterobius trichiura - Whipworm
Ascaris lumbricoides - Large roundworm
Ancylostoma duodenale - Hookworm
Necator americanus - Tapeworm
Taenia spp. - Strongyloides stercoralis

Dosage & Administration
Adults or children over 2 years of age : 400 mg (1 Albamax DS tablet) as a single dose in cases of Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris Lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus.In cases of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis : 400 mg (1 Albamax DS tablet) as single dose should be given for 2 consecutive days.If the patient is not cured on follow-up after three weeks, a second course of treatment is indicated, Albamax DS tablets may be chewed, swallowed or crushed and mixed with food. No specific procedures such as fasting or purging are required. Children under 2 years of age : Not recommended
Hydatid disease : For Echinococcus granulosus, adult over 60 kg, medical treatment. 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days; up to 3 cycles of treatment may be given.Adjunct in surgical treatment, pre-surgery, 800mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days, repeat cycle once before surgery; post-surgery (if viable cysts after pre-surgery treatment, or if no pre-surgery treatment, or if only short pre-surgery course), 800 mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days, repeat cycle once, Echinococcus multiloculari, adult over 60kg, 800mg daily in divided doses for 28 days followed by 14 tablet-free days; prolonged treatment may be required
Contraindications
Because albendazole was found to be embratogenic in rat and rabbit, its use is contraindicated in pregnant women or those likely to be pregnant, For women of child bearing age (15-45 years), Albamax DS should be administered within 7 days of the start of normal menstruation.

Adverse Reactions
A few cases of gastrointestinal discomfort and headache have been reported, but no definite relationship with the drug has been shown.
