Sparflox
Description:
Sparfloxacin is a synthetic broad spectrum aminofluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent. It is more effective than Ciprofloxacin against some organisms like staphylococci and mycobacteria.

Indication/Use:
Sparflox (Sparfloxacin) is indicated for the treatment of adults (>18 years of age) with the following infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms:
Upper & Lower Respiratory Tract Infection: Sinusitis, bronchitis, COPD, lung abscess, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia etc. Urinary Tract infections including gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis,chlamydia infections, chancroid and other sexually transmitted diseases. Surgical infections. Skin and soft tissue infections. Prophylactic Use in different urological and opythalmic operations.

Dosage Guideline:
Adults: 400 mg on day one followed by 200 mg/day for 5-10 days. In renal failure of third degree severity, dose modification is recommended as: 400 mg on day one, 200 mg/day on day 2 & 3 following by 200 mg every 48 hours
Children: Below 18 years of age not recommended.
MDR-TB: Sparfloxacin 400 mg combined with other Anti- TB drugs for 6 months was found very effective.

Side Effects:
Side effects with Sparfloxacin are mild and transient. Side effects includes: Rashes urticaria, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sleep disturbance, pain, tendinitis, phototoxicity, cardiac rhythm disturbance etc.

Contraindication:
Hypersensitivity to any of the fluoroquinolones including Sparfloxacin, pregnancy and lactation, history of tendinitis following the use of fluoroquinolones, glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6PD) deficiencies.

Drug Interaction:
Aluminium, Magnesium & Calcium salts decrease the absorption of Sparfloxacin.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
Sparfloxacin should be used during pregnancy & lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk of fetus.

Precaution:
Renal disease, gastric ulcer, concomitant use of NSAID’s.
