Floxabid
Description:
Floxabid®is the preparation of Ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic.Ciprofloxacin has broad spectrum of activity.lt is active against most Gram-negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceaeand Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Indications:
Floxabid®is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, lower respiratorytract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and jointinfections and gastro intestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Dosage and administration:
Adults: The usual dosage range for adults is 250-750mg twice daily.

Generally, treatment should be continued for at least 2 days after thesigns and symptoms of the infection have disappeared.

Dosage guidelines for SR tablet
Floxabid®SR 1000mg tablet should be swallowed whole. Do not split,crush, or chew the tablet

Dosage guidelines for pellets for suspensions
Pediatricpatients & adolescents (1 to 17 years of age):Enteric fever:10-30mg /kg/day in two divided doses for 10 days.Acute invasive diarrhea:10-30mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 3 days.Shigellosis:10-30mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 5 days.UTI: 20-40mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 10-21 days.

Impaired renal function:
In case of severe renal impairment the total dailydose should be half.

Elderly:Dose adjustment not required.

Pregnancy & lactation:The safety and effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin inpregnantand lactating women have not been established.

Precautions:
It should be used with caution in patients with suspected or known CNSdisorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy or other factors whichpredispose to seizures and convulsion.

Side effects:
Side effects include nausea and other gastrointestinal disturbances,headache, dizziness and skin rashes. Crystalluria has occurred with highdoses.

Contraindications:
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or to otherquinolones.

Drug interactions:
Ciprofloxacin should not be administered within four hours of medicationscontaining magnesium/aluminiumHydroxide, or iron salts as interferencewith absorption may occur. lncreased plasma levels of theophylline havebeen observed following concurrent administration with Ciprofloxacin.

Overdosage:
No information on over dose is available. Routine measures such asgastric lavage should be performed as soon
as possible after ingestion ofCiprofloxacin.

Pharmaceutical precautions:
Store in a cool and dry place. Protect from light.
