Dumaflox
Description:
Ciprofloxacin is a film coated tablet containing ciprofloxacin, a synthetic fluoroquinolone with bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms. The bacterial action of ciprofloxacin results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase which maintains super helical twists in DNA.
Ciprofloxacin tablet is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract and maximum serum concentrations are attained within 1 to 2 hours after oral administration. Ciprofloxacin is widely distributed throughout the body tissues including CSF and 20-24% is bound to serum proteins. The serum elimination half-life in subjects with normal renal function is approximately 4 hours. The absolute bioavailability is approximately 70% with no substantial loss by first pass metabolism. Approximately 40-50% of an crally administered dose is excreted in the urine as unchanged drug and 20-35% of an oral dose is excreted in faeces.

The duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection, clinical response and bacteriological findings. The usual duration is 7 to 14 days, however, for severe and complicated infections more prolonged therapy may be required. Bone and joint infections may require treated for 4 to 6 weeks or longer. Infections diarrhoea may be treated for 5-7 days. Generally Ciprofloxacin should be continued for at least 2 days after signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared.
Side Effects:
The adverse reactions have occasionally been observed are nausea, Vomiting dyspepsia, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, tiredness, skin rashes, pruritus joint pain, blurred vision, tinnitus, bad taste, palpitation etc.
Contraindication:
Ciprofloxacin is contraindicated in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
Drug Interaction:
Concurrent administration of ciprofloxacin with theophylline may lead to elevated serum concentration of theophylline and prolongation of its elimination half-life. This may result in increased risk of theophylline related adverse reactions. If concomitant use cannot be avoided, serum levels of theophylline should be monitored and dosage adjustments made as appropriate. Concurrent administration of ciprofloxacin with antacids containing magnesium, aluminium or calcium, Iron & probably zinc may substantially interfere with the absorption of ciprofloxacin resulting in serum and urine levels considerably lower than desired.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
Ciprofloxacin has been shown to cause arthropathy in immature animals and therefore , its use during pregnancy is not recommended. Studies in rats have indicated that Ciprofloxacin is secreted in milk, administration to nursing mothers is thus not recommended.
Precaution:
Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with a history of convulsive disorders Crystal Luria related to the use of Ciprofloxacin has been observed rarely. Patients receiving Ciprofloxacin should be well hydrated and excessive alkalinity of the urine should be avoided.
Therapeutic Class:
Anti-Infective
Dosage Form:
Tablet and PFS
Storage:
Should be stored in cool place and dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
