Moxiflox
Description:
Moxiflox (Moxifloxacin) is a synthetic broad spectrum, flouroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent. Moxifloxacin has in vitro activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. The bactericidal action of Moxifloxacin results from inhibition of the topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination. Moxifloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent available as Moxiflox Tab. for oral administration.

Indication/Use:
Moxiflox tablets are indicated for the treatment of:
Acute bacterial sinusitis
Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
Community acquired pneumonia
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure

Dosage Guideline:
The dose of Moxiflox is 400 mg (orally or as an intravenous infusion) once every 24 hours. The duration of therapy depends on the type of infection as described below.
• In Acute Bacterial Sinusitis Moxifloxacin 400 mg is given once daily for 7 days.
• In Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis Moxifloxacin 400 mg is given once dail for 5 days.
• In Community Acquired Pneumonia Moxifloxacin 400 mg is given once daily for 7-14 days.
• In Uncomplicated Skin & Skin Structure infections Moxifloxacin 400 mg is given once daily for 7 days.
• In Complicated Skin & Skin Structure infections Moxifloxacin 400 mg is given once daily for 7-21 days.

Side Effects:
Side effects of Moxifloxacin may include:abdominal pain, anemia, anxiety, decreased blood pressure, diarrhea, dizziness headache, drowsiness, insomnia, joint and muscle pain, nausea, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, rash, sweating.

Contraindication:
Moxifloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or any member of the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents.

Drug Interaction:
Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium ions inhibit the absorption of Moxifloxacin. Drugs that prolong the QT interval (e.g., pimozide) may have an additive effect on QT prolongation and lead to increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias. Moxifloxacin may also interact with warfarin. Caution may be warranted when using theophylline with all of the fluoroquinolones, including Moxifloxacin.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category C. Moxifloxacin is not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.

Over Dose:
Overdose symptoms may include tremors, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures (convulsions).

Precaution:
The safety and effectiveness of Moxifloxacin in pediatric patients, adolescents (less than 18 years of age), pregnant women and lactating women have not been established. Moxifloxacin has been shown to prolong the QT interval of the electrocardiogram n some patients. The drug should be avoided in patients with known prolongation of QT interval, patients with uncorrected hypokalemia and patients receiving antiarrhythmic agents.
