Epizam
Description:
Clonazepam (Epizam) is a benzodiazepine derivative. It is used in the treatment of panic disorders and seizure disorders. Clonazepam binds with the benzodiazepine site of GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) receptor and potentiate the efficacy of GABA, resulting in a greater entry of chloride ion and the cell gains more negative charge which causes the reduction of neural excitability.

Composition:
Epizam 0.5 Tab: Each tablet contains Clonazepam USP 0.5 mg.
Epizam 2 Tab: Each tablet contains Clonazepam USP 2 mg.

Indication/Use:
Anxiety as well as panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia
All forms of epilepsy and other seizure disorders

Dosage Guideline:
Dosage must be determined in each patient according to clinical response and tolerance.

Side Effects:
The most frequently occurring side effects of Clonazepam are referable to CNS depression. Drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, confusion, tremor and respiratory depression may occur. In some case, these may diminish with time. Behavioural problems and salivation have been noted.

Contraindication:
Patients with hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines, acute pulmonary insufficiency, respiratory depression, significant liver dysfunction and acute narrow-angle glaucoma.

Drug Interaction:
Interactions have been reported between some benzodiazepines and other anticonvulsants, with changes in the serum concentration.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation:
Clonazepam is pregnancy category 'D'. The use of Clonazepam during pregnancy should be avoided. Clonazepam is excreted into the breast milk and should therefore be avoided in breast-feeding mothers.

Over Dose:
The cardinal manifestations of overdosage are drowsiness and confusion, reduced reflexes and coma. There are minimal effects on respiration, pulse and blood pressure, unless the overdosage is extreme.

Precaution:
Patients using Clonazepam should be cautioned against hazardous occupation requiring mental alertness. Concomitant use of alcohol and other CNS depressants potentiate the depressant activity of Clonazepam. This should be used with caution in patient with chronic respiratory disease.
