Benfloxin
PRESENTATION:
Benfloxin 500 tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Levofloxacin hemihydrate INN equivalent to Levofloxacin 500 mg.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Levofloxacin is synthetic, broad spectrum antibacterial agent for oral administration. Chemically Levofloxacin is a chiral fluorinated carboxyquinolone.

INDICATION:
Levofloxacin is indicated for the treatment of adults with mild to moderate and severe infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the. condition listed below.
● Acute maxillary sinusitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae. or Moraxella catarrhalis.
● Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus mfluenzae, or Voraxella catarrhalis.
● Community acquired pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophrlus influenzae, Kiebsiella pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila. or Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
● Complicated urinary tract infections due to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella penumoniae or Streptococcus saprophyticus.
● Uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections including abscesses, cellulltis, furunculosis, impetigo, pyoderma, wound infections due to Staphylococcus aureus. or Streptococcus pyogenes.
● Acute pyelonephritis caused by Escherichia coli.
● Enteric fever caused by Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
● Acute max;llary sinusitis: 500 mg daily for 10-14 days
● Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 250 mg - 500 mg daily for 7 - 10 days
● Community acquired pneumonia: 500 mg once or twice daily for 7-14 days
● Complicated urinary tract infections: 250 mg daily for 7-10 days
● Uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, 250 mg once or 500 mg once or twice daily for 7-14 days
● Acute pyelonephritis: 250 mg once daily for 7-10 days

CONTRAINDICATION:
Levofloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents or any components of the product.

PRECAUTION AND WARNING:
The following measures should be taken during administration of Levofloxacin
● While taking Levofloxacin adequate amount of water should intake to avoid concentrated form of urine.
● Be cautions in taking Levofloxacin in presence of renal insufficiency.

SIDE EFFECT:
Levofloxacin is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects which are usually mild include nausea, diarrhoea, itching, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dizziness, flatulence, rash and vaginitis in women.

USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Levofloxacin is not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing, as the effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown. USE IN CHILDREN: Not recommended for use in children.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Concurrent administraton of Levofloxacin tablets with antacids containing magnesium or aluminium, as well as sucrefate, metal cations such as Iron & Multivitamin preparations with zinc may reduce the absorption of Levofloxacin. The concomitant administration of a NSAID may increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizers.

Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool and dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
